Hugh Samuel

Hugh Samuel’s life was a testament to resilience and family devotion. Born in 1901 in the small town of Conecuh, Alabama, he was the fifth of twelve children in a household bustling with the energy of a large family.

Mattie Jones-Samuel

November 2, 1902 - March 2, 1992

Mattie Lee Jones, lovingly known as “Sweet Mama,” was a woman whose warmth and spirit touched everyone who knew her. Born on November 3, 1902, in Evergreen, Alabama, she was the eldest of 13 children—a natural leader and nurturer from the very beginning. Her parents, Lewis “Cap” Jones Sr. and Sallie “Daught” Likely, instilled in her a deep sense of family and community that would guide her throughout her life..
